City University London unveils major new sport and exercise complex

City University London has cut the ribbon on its CitySport leisure complex – one of the largest sports facilities to be developed in central London.
The new 3,289sq m (35,402sq ft) CitySport complex is 80 per cent larger than the Saddlers Sports Centre which previously occupied the site on Goswell Road.
Practice tp bennett were the architects and interior designers on CitySport, which features a Sport England standard sports hall – able to stage county standard badminton, basketball, indoor football, hockey, volleyball and netball events – with high performance flooring and seating for over 400 spectators. Also on site is a 120-station gym equipped by Matrix, five studios, plus a designated indoor cycling studio for both virtual and instructor led sessions, featuring the Myride system.
“CitySport has been designed to provide a local hub for sporting activities, with its large hall for team games, studios for wellbeing classes and a gym fitted with the latest fitness equipment,” said head of Sport and Leisure at City University Bill Thompson.
“These fantastic facilities maximise the available space by combining great design with leading edge technology, making it one of the best university sports centres in the country.”
Work has started on a major redevelopment at Cwmbran Stadium in Wales,
which will see the creation of a 70-station fitness suite and the existing four-
court sports hall remodelled into a vertical adventure playground, soft play
centre and cafe.
A planning application for an £11m leisure centre in Washington has been
unveiled by Sunderland City Council. The centre will include a six lane, 25m
pool, a four court sports hall, a multi-purpose sports hall, two squash courts,
sauna, steamrooms and relaxation area, a soft play centre and football pitches.
A wellness centre will comprise a 100-station gym, spinning studio, exercise
studio and two consultation rooms.
The relaunch of a 20m swimming pool and sports hall at Golden Lane Sport and
Fitness in the City of London has marked the completion of an extensive £2.65m
refurbishment.
Leisure Media has added another heavyweight to its line-up of CEOs for its inaugural HCM
Summit this October. Dean Kowarski will talk about the intersection of fitness and nutrition.
Speaking in the HCM Handbook 2024-2025, which will be out next month, PureGym managing
director, Rebecca Passmore, says the company is on track to deliver on its global expansion
plans.
