Leisure industry leaders feature in New Year Honours list

A number of leisure industry people have been recognised in this year's New Year Honours list.

Sport

Former England rugby captain and current chair of World Rugby Bill Beaumont has been knighted for services to rugby. The former RFU chair has steered World Rugby since 2016.

He is joined on the knighthood list by Commonwealth Games Federation president Louise Martin, who has been made a dame (DME).

Those receiving CBEs include outgoing Premier League chair Richard Scudamore; World Curling Federation president Kate Caithness; and Geva Mentor, who helped England's netball team win Commonwealth Games gold.

The England football national team manager Gareth Southgate and 2018 Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas are made OBEs, as is Baroness Margaret Ford, the former chair of the London Legacy Development Corporation, who was recognised for services to sport and business.

Those given an MBE include Olympic rower Frances Houghton, hockey's Karen Brown, triathlon world champion Helen Jenkins, former Arsenal and Football Association vice-chair David Dein, UK Athletics Paralympic head coach Paula Dunn and ex-footballer Leroy Rosenior – who is now vice-president of Show Racism The Red Card.

The two co-founders of the Women's Sport Trust – Jo Bostock and Tammy Parlour – also received MBEs for services to gender equality in sport.

Charles Reed, the outgoing chair of the Activity Alliance (formerly the English Federation of Disability Sport) has been given an MBE for services to disabled people in sport.

Fitness/wellness

Professor Jeremy Farrar, director of The Wellcome Trust has been knighted for services to global health.

Elaine Wyllie, the founder of The Daily Mile initiative – which encourages children to run or jog for 15 minutes every day in their primary and nursery schools – has been given an MBE for services to the fitness of children.

Attractions

Ian Blatchford, director of the Science Museum Group, has been knighted for services to cultural education, while Caroline Collier, director of partnerships and programmes at The Tate has been given an OBE for services to galleries, museums and the arts in the UK.

There were OBEs for Samuel Mullins, director, London Transport Museum and Andrew Nairne, the former director of Dundee Contemporary Arts and current director of Kettle's Yard in Cambridge.

Mike O'Connor, deputy director of the National Army Museum, has also been given an OBE for services to Military Heritage, while Sharon Granville, executive director of Museum of Liverpool received an MBE.

A host of business leaders from the world of sport have been recognised alongside winners from the field in the New Year Honours list 2018. Clare Connor OBE, director of women’s cricket for the England and Wales Cricket Board, was appointed CBE, as was Joyce Cook OBE, for services to sport and accessibility.
