Japan’s Ibaraki Kashima Stadium – which was damaged during a large earthquake in 2011 – will be used as a venue for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games football tournament.

The stadium is located in Kashima City – just east of Tokyo – and is fully operational after assistance from FIFA and stakeholders.

Home to Japan’s most successful club team, the Kashima Antlers, the stadium was originally built in 1993 and holds a capacity of 40,000.

Ibaraki Kashima Stadium was also used for the 2002 World Cup, which Japan co-hosted with neighbour South Korea.

It hosted three group stage matches, including Argentina v Nigeria, Germany v Republic of Ireland and Italy v Croatia.

The stadium was partially damaged during the 9.0 earthquake in Tohoku six years ago.
