An offer has been made on a Six Flags theme park that was left desolate in the wake of Hurricane Ketrina and remains abandoned to this day.
A developer has said they would pay US$3.26m (€3.1m, £2.6m) for the site, which is now owned by the New Orleans Industrial Development Board, with the aim of opening a new musical-themed park, dubbed Jazzland.
According to the company, TPC-NOLA, the new attraction would include Jazzland Theme Park, Baritone Beach Waterpark, the Sportsman’s Paradise Resort Hotel and a retail and dining complex. Claiming to be “shovel ready”, the developers promise work would start as soon as a sale was agreed.
The Six Flags theme park was abandoned in 2005 after severe flooding stemming from Hurricane Katrina and has since been frequented by vandals and trespassers. TPC-NOLA previously offered US$2.5m for the site. In August 2016 a real-estate appraisal firm valued the land at US$3m.
TPC-NOLA, which is headed up by Tonya Pope and a subsidiary of the Paidia Company, says Jazzland could attract up to 850,000 visitors and raise more than US$40m annually.
