Godzilla is going on the rampage in Japan again – this time at Universal Studios in January to tie in with the release of new Godzilla movie.

The cinematic attraction – ‘Godzilla: The Real 4-D’ – will offer an immersive experience when it opens on 13 January 2017, culminating in a face-to-face with the 118.5m-tall (390ft) monster as it rampages through the streets of Osaka.

Shin Godzilla – the 31st film in the Godzilla franchise – hit Japanese cinemas on 29 July, so far making ¥4.5bn (US$44m, €39m, £33.4m) at the box office. The new experience at Universal will be closely tied to the reboot, with an all-new story exclusive to the Osaka theme park.

The new attraction will be part of Universal Cool Japan, which for 2017 will have Godzilla as its headline draw. 2016’s event included a virtual reality ride inspired by Japanese fashion model and singer Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (Crayon Shin-chan), while also welcoming back the event’s Attack on Titan recreation, Evangelion 4D dark ride, Biohazard (Resident Evil) immersive experience and Monster Hunter recreation, all with new features and upgrades.

Universal Cool Japan – which first debuted in 2015 – contributed to increasing the number of visitors to the theme park by about 200,000 a month during its six-month run last year.
