Uruguay and Argentina mooted for historic 2030 World Cup bid
POSTED 01 Apr 2016 . BY Matthew Campelli
Infantino said that 'history must be respected' in relation to a potential bid
Uruguay and Argentina have been mooted by FIFA president Gianni Infantino as serious candidates to co-host the 2030 World Cup.

Speaking at the South American Football Confederation’s (CONMEBOL) headquarters in Paraguay, the newly-elected leader of the world football governing body said that he would be interested in a co-hosting proposal.

According to Reuters, Infantino said: “An important theme is whether the World Cup can be played in more than one country. FIFA has been very much a joint organisation. I personally support it.”

He added: “2030 is a very important year and history must be respected.”

Uruguay hosted and won the first World Cup in 1930, beating neighbours Argentina 4-2 in the final. If the bid was successful, it would also be the second time Argentina hosts the tournament. Like Uruguay, the nation won the trophy on home soil in 1978.

The World Cup has only been hosted in two countries once: Japan and South Korea in 2002.
