Prince Harry reveals Toronto as the Invictus Games 2017 host
POSTED 17 Mar 2016 . BY Matthew Campelli
Prince Harry is the patron of the Invictus Games Foundation
The 2017 edition of the Invictus Games – the international para-sport event for wounded service people – will be held in Toronto, Canada.

Revealed by Prince Harry, the patron of the Invictus Games Foundation, the event will take place in September 2017, and coincides with “a year steeped in rich Canadian military history” and its 150th anniversary of confederation.

Toronto won the right to host the Games as its sporting venues and infrastructure “offer competitors and their families a real Canadian experience”. The city hosted thousands of visitors during the 2015 Pan American and Para-Pan American Games.

The Invictus Games Foundation – which selects the host cities – sets out desired requirements for the Games, including a minimum of 10 participating nations; 250 competitors and five sports; a strong families programme; appropriate venues and sporting infrastructure; and extensive broadcast and media coverage.

“The last Invictus Games (in London 2014) inspired tens of thousands of people and was enjoyed by millions of others around the world,” said Prince Harry. “I always hoped the Invictus story would continue after the London Games.”

London’s hosting of the inaugural Invictus Games saw 300 ex-military personnel compete from 13 countries, including Afghanistan, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, France, Georgia, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the UK and the US.

The next edition of the Games will take place in Orlando in May this year.

Michael Burns, chief executive of Invictus Games Toronto 2017, added: “This country’s non-military citizens actively look for ways to express their gratitude to our military, and the Invictus Games will provide an ideal forum for what we know will be an unprecedented outpouring of support.”
