Euro 2016 looks set to be the first UEFA-organised international tournament to use goal-line technology.

Pierluigi Collina, the chief refereeing officer for the European football governing body, revealed that the UEFA Executive Committee was “comfortable” to make the decision now following its review of the technology and in advance of this summer’s tournament in France.

“This did not happen overnight,” said Collina. “It was well over a year ago that [former] UEFA president Michel Platini proposed that we investigate the possibility of having goal-line technology working side by side with additional assistant referees to further improve results on the field.”

UEFA’s Executive Committee, meeting in Nyon tomorrow, is expected to give the technology the green light. If so, it will be used across all of its competitions include the Champions League and Europa League.

Major European leagues – the English Premier League, Italy’s Serie A, Ligue 1 in France and the German Bundesliga – all use goal-line technology. The latest FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014 was the first to use the technology in all of its 64 matches.
