Government and Premier League strike deal to offer school sports to every primary school
POSTED 05 Oct 2015 . BY Tom Walker
Fit for Sport’s Engage to Compete initiative is aimed at primary school children
Every primary school in the UK is set to benefit from organised sports sessions, following a deal struck between the government and the English Premier League (EPL).

The Premier League School Sport Programme is currently available at more than 4,000 primary schools, but the new deal will mean the figure will increase to 10,000 schools in the next three years and reach all primary schools (16,000) by the end of 2021.

The deal forms a central part of Prime Minister David Cameron’s new Grassroots Sport Initiative.

Cameron said: “Every child should have the opportunity to play sport, benefit from great coaching and be part of a team.

“I’m delighted we have struck a deal with the Premier League to expand their work to all primary schools. This is part of our plan to give every child the best possible start in life.”

Separately, the EPL and the government are also in discussions about setting up a new grassroots sport fund with investment to come from the EPL.

Further details of the fund will be announced as part of the government’s new strategy on sport later in the year.

The Conservative Party is currently holding its annual conference in Manchester. For more updates, click here.
