Irish attraction plans Game of Thrones-style Celtic adventure park

Bunratty Castle and Folk Park in County Clare, Ireland, is looking to Game of Thrones to revitalise the tourist attraction, with tentative plans for a Celtic adventure park in the style of the hit TV show.

Clare County Council has unanimously passed a proposal which envisages a public/private partnership scheme to develop the new facility. Thanks to a defunct 2011 proposal to build a Disney-style theme park in the area, the land earmarked for the adventure park has already been zoned by the council.

Unlike the show – which is very adult in nature – the park would be aimed at families and younger people.

“We have to be open to this idea. This will not be in competition with the Bunratty experience as it is currently, it will be in addition,” said Pat McMahon, the councillor who proposed the development. “This would be a new concept and I think it would attract families from all over the country.”

During the meeting, the Game of Thrones-esque theme was suggested, with councillors keen to capitalise on the show’s popularity.

“The sooner we get around to doing something on this the better,” added councillor PJ Ryan. “The folk park had become a bit stale. We have an increase in tourists coming through Shannon at the moment and we need something for them.”

Clare County Council will now lay out plans and seek potential investors to turn the multi-million euro proposal into a reality.
