Places for People Leisure (PPL) has been appointed by Sheffield City Council to manage and operate two new sites which represent the council’s biggest investment into the city’s leisure facilities for 20 years.

The 10-year contract will see PPL operate Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre – which is currently under redevelopment – and a new site at Thorncliffe in the High Green area.

PPL officially took over the existing Graves centre on 1 April and will also manage the new facility when it opens on the same site in 2016.

Bam Construction is to transform Graves Leisure Centre under a £16m contract with Sheffield City Council. The complex will include a 1,000sq m (10,764sq ft) elite performance gymnastics and trampolining facility, swimming pools, health and fitness suite and 18 tennis courts. The facility will also act as the new headquarters for the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) and will include an NHS outpatient facility.

The site in Thorncliffe will include a 25m (82ft) swimming pool and learner pool, large health and fitness suite and training studio spaces. It will also house NCSEM facilities including treatment and consultation rooms. PPL will manage the centre once it opens in early 2016.

“We look forward to working with Places for People Leisure to deliver excellent and affordable facilities to the people of Sheffield,” said Sheffield City Council member Isobel Bowler.

“These two new centres will create new job opportunities and will play an instrumental role in the development of sport across the city.”
