A £2m indoor urban sports and trampoline park is set to open at the Playsport complex in East Kilbride.

AirSpace, a ‘spring loaded urban playground’ will be a second brand for growing adventure high wire experience company Go Ape, and Scotland’s first indoor facility of this type.

Go Ape has targeted East Kilbride as a launchpad for AirSpace to capitalise on the wave of interest in sport generated by the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The company already operates three Go Ape centres in Scotland, but this move is a departure from its treetop adventure business and takes it into the fast growing world of parkour and other urban-based sports.

Set to be the largest freestyle jumping arena in Europe, the centre will feature more than 100 interconnected, wall to wall trampolines. The operators also plan to introduce ‘team sports with a twist’ including dodgeball, basketball and football.

“Glasgow has a vibrant culture for urban and extreme sports and is a young-at-heart city, with a higher than average 18-25 population,” said AirSpace operations manager Pete Brown. “Indoor trampoline arenas have taken the US and Australia by storm and it’s fantastic to be at the forefront of the buzz in Scotland.”

The new centre will complement the nearby Coatbridge Parkour Park, which opened in 2011 and is operated by Parkour Generations. This outdoor facility has proved extremely popular, leading to a £100,000 upgrade which was completed in July.

Playsport is owned by pan-European property developer Hansteen Holdings, which has made a significant investment in this area of East Kilbride and is aiming to attract more restaurants and leisure operators.

The site currently includes the EK Skatepark, which will be rebranded later this year as Zone74, plus football pitches, a golf course and driving range, indoor tennis and climbing wall, indoor and outdoor soft play areas. An outdoor space has been earmarked for tennis courts. Playsport is adjacent to the Kingsgate Retail Park.
