Ageing Bridgend Rec gets 21st century facelift
POSTED 28 May 2014 . BY Jak Phillips
The former first floor lobby has been converted into a thermal spa
Bridgend Recreation Centre has been given a new lease of life following a £4.5m 18-month leisure development project.

Work began on the then-creaking 1970s site in October 2012, and the facility has been given a dramatic makeover, with development partner Pulse overseeing the design, build and equipment fit out.

The most striking development at the Halo Leisure-operated site has been the addition of a thermal suite and spa. The former first floor lobby has been converted to create the new facility which includes a steamroom, ice igloo, sauna, heated ceramic beds and experience shower. There is also a relaxation area and treatment rooms, where guests can enjoy a range of therapies and beauty treatments.

The fitness suite has been relocated and enlarged to 100-stations to meet member demand. The gym is kitted out with Pulse Fusion cardiovascular equipment, Evolve strength equipment, an X-Cube functional rig and a free weights section. It also features Pulse’s SmartCentre interactive technology, which stores personalised gym workout programmes and gives user feedback and guidance.

Three new exercise studios have been created for extended group exercise programmes, in addition to a 10m (33ft) climbing wall and new toning suite. The sports hall has been redeveloped into a two-storey library, children’s indoor soft play area and four-court hall.

“As a leisure operator ourselves, we understood the importance of minimising the impact of the build on current customers,” said managing director of Pulse Chris Johnson.

“Developments have taken place in three phases so the centre could stay open throughout the work. We also know first-hand exactly what customers want from their local leisure facility and how best to maximise space to ensure everything works together seamlessly and efficiently.”
