London has been proclaimed as the selfie capital of the world, according to research carried out by personal mapping service Suggestme.com

The company found that of 6.3 million self-portrait photos taken and posted onto Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, 14.05 per cent of those came from within the UK capital.

London was the most popular location for the medium, with landmarks such as Big Ben, The London Eye and Buckingham Palace featuring prominently.

New York and Amsterdam finished a close second and third respectively thanks to visitor hotspots such as Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, while Barcelona, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Sydney, Istanbul, and Athens rounded off the top 10.

While London may have come out on top overall, Rome’s Colosseum was the number one place for a selfie, with the Eiffel Tower in second and Big Ben coming in third place.
