An All Party Commission on Physical Activity has been established in an attempt to help tackle levels of inactivity in the UK, with the commission set to release a report featuring direct, policy-based recommendations in the spring of next year.

The commission is to be led by Parliamentarians who will take evidence from a cross-party and cross-sector group of experts - including those currently working in sectors such as health, sport, transport and education - to help produce recommendations for measures which should be implemented to counter the problem of physical inactivity.

Parliamentarians invited to serve on the commission include acclaimed former wheelchair racer and television presenter Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson.

The establishment of the commission comes in the wake of the Designed to Move report, which has provided strong evidence of the damage inactivity has had on society at large, leading today's children to face a shorter life expectancy than their parents.

The commission has been welcomed by many in the health and fitness sector, with ukactive declaring its support for the idea.

“We are delighted that this Commission has been established to investigate physical inactivity. This is an opportunity to form practical recommendations which will support inactive people to become active for the good of their health,” said David Stalker, CEO of ukactive.

“It’s essential that the Commission does not become simply a talking shop but gains cross-party political support to actively back its recommendations. The Commission has to consider the totality of the challenge facing us in tackling inactivity and develop a strategy and set of recommendations which reflect the broad nature of this challenge.”
