Online community aims to improve fitness of UK women
POSTED 02 Jan 2013 . BY Jessica Tasman-Jones
The She Moves website hopes to establish an online community of women trying to get fit and went live in the New Year
A national campaign to get the UK’s women moving was launched by the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF) on 1 January.

In time for women whose New Year’s resolution is to get more active, She Moves aims to create an online community where users can access advice, tips and support on improving fitness.

Mother of two Avril Hammond is the first among a group of women who will blog their progress as they aim to get fitter in 2013.

The campaign comes as WSFF releases new figures revealing just 33 per cent of women under 65 consider exercise to be a regular priority.

Mothers with children under 15 found it particularly difficult to find time to exercise, with 81 per cent prioritising spending time with their families instead and 71 per cent prioritising household tasks.

Despite this 45 per cent of women surveyed said getting fit would be one of their New Year’s resolutions.

Hammond said she hoped to inspire other women to get fit and active by sharing her story online, and at the same time act as a healthy role model to her daughter by choosing a more active lifestyle.

WSFF chief executive Sue Tibballs said 2012 was an inspirational year for women’s sport and the campaign hopes to build on that in 2013.

“We’re not here to tell women what they already know – our research shows that women want to do more exercise, and they know it’s good for them – we just want to offer a bit of support and motivation to make exercise a regular part of their lives.”
