Stockport Council's executive has backed plans to acquire a long leasehold to a town centre building currently occupied by retailer Debenhams for a leisure-led regeneration scheme.
The decision aims to allow the local authority to move forward with the redevelopment of the Bridgefield site, which will also unify the council's ownership in the area.
Stockport Council leader Dave Goddard said: "[This opportunity] would help us move forward with a revised and robust new regeneration scheme for Bridgefield."
