Fire stations in Coventry are putting in place a series of health-focused family activities – from exercise groups to cooking classes - in an attempt to reduce the number of house fires in the city.
The classes may sound like an odd idea at first, but the West Midlands Fire Service has said that some people are so unfit that their reactions aren't quick enough when a fire breaks out.
Simon Shilton, fi re service operations commander for Coventry, says: "We've had to rescue people who couldn't respond fast enough to a fire in another room or who got trapped because they couldn't get downstairs quick enough."
The activities will also address issues such as smoking and cooking greasy food in chip pans.
