Rainer Schaller's RSG Group has opened a John Reed Fitness club in downtown Los Angeles – the first in North America.

Located in the city's vibrant South Park neighbourhood, the 33,000sq ft, high-end club combines functional design with a club-like atmosphere.

It will offer free weights areas, cardio and strength zones, functional training and a wide range of boutique-style classes such as indoor cycling, HIIT, pilates, barre, dance and yoga.

Members will also have unlimited access to a number of additional amenities, from the Snooze Room and Sauna to relaxation areas for post-workout.

The site is the 31st John Reed-branded club globally.

Robert Hull, club manager, John Reed Los Angeles, said: "John Reed Downtown Los Angeles gives our members the best quality and training opportunities in an environment that is immersive, elevated and inclusive.

"I think more than ever, gym-goers want a place that really motivates and removes them from their 'every day', a place that excites them. With our location's eclectic interior, the music curation, and exceptional equipment, we give our members that experience."

The location of the first John Reed club in the US suggests that RSG – led by Rainer Schaller, the founder of budget gym megabrand McFIT – is setting out on a cluster approach for its Northern American operations.

RSG, already a leader in the European fitness market, became a global player last year, following its acquisition of Gold's Gym for US$100m.

The new John Reed club is just a five-minute drive from a Gold's Gym site in downtown LA.

While expanding John Reed's footprint to North America, RSG is also introducing Gold's Gym to the German market, with the opening of a flagship studio in the capital city Berlin any day now.

This will also be the first Gold's Gym club to be operated by RSG in Europe.

RSG Group's portfolio comprises 17 fitness brands – including Gold's Gym, McFIT, John Reed, High5, and Cyberobics.
