Theatre sound and communication systems specialists Orbital Sound have unveiled a collect-and-recycle scheme in a move to encourage the responsible processing of used dry-cell batteries.
Using a custom case for the safe storage and transit of batteries, the scheme is aimed at touring theatre productions and West End shows.
The service is said to be an easy and inexpensive option in meeting legal duty-of-care responsibilities for the safe disposal of all battery types, with a single musical equipped with 24 channels of radio mics claimed to consume as many as 400 batteries per week.
Tim Sherratt, technical director of Orbital, said: “[the] legislation involves the safe storage, transport and disposal of all waste batteries, irrespective of their chemical composition, and all users are bound by this. The used batteries are then stored at our facilities, pending their collection by Battery Back, one of the UK's largest battery recycling agents.”
