George Bryan, founder and chair of Drayton Manor theme park, has been awarded an OBE for his contribution to tourism in the UK.
Bryan’s determination and skill in opening a successful tourist attraction in the tough environment of post-war Britain was mentioned as exemplary.
Bryan said: “I feel very honoured to receive the OBE. I have indeed enjoyed Drayton Manor and still ‘people watch’ each morning, even at the age of 83. I never get bored.”
The history of Dayton Manor dates back to 1949, when Bryan bought a group of derelict properties and surrounding land near Tamworth in Staffordshire.
During the first few years, the original 250 acre site had no rides while entertainment was limited to a handful of boats and a restricted range of refreshments – due to rationing still being in force.
Gradually, the park grew to a nationally recognised visitor attraction and the zoo opened in 1957.
