British Cycling has revealed it plans to have 1m more women cycling in the UK by 2020 by shifting the culture and accessibility of the sport.
A document released this week 'A Journey of Inspiration and Opportunity - Our Vision for women's cycling 2013-2020' revealed the organisation wants increased female membership, more women riding competitively and more women involved in the governing of the sport.
In 2012 the number of UK women cycling say at 525,000.
British Cycling research revealed 30 per cent of women identified safety as the main barrier to participation in the sport, followed by lack of knowledge about local routes and not having anyone to go with.
The organisation said it aimed to get more women riding through their Breeze participation programme, established in 2010, and Go-Ride - a programme established to get more Britons cycling.
It would also continue to campaign for safer roads for all cyclists.
Other planned activities include holiday programmes for teens and regional coaching sessions to get women into the sport.
The organisation also states it intends to create at least 25 per cent female representation at the board level.
