A Durham community has voted for £500,000 of capital funding to go towards an eco-friendly fitness and wellness centre, to replace the closure of Glenholme Leisure Centre in 2012.
The vote, open to anyone who lives, works or volunteers in the Crooks community, took place on 23 February. Other organisations campaigning for the money included a mobile arts facility, an equine therapy and several community centres.
The winning campaign by the Crook Community Partnership and Spectrum Leisure and Community will see the redevelopment of the former Crook Infants School at a cost of £900,000 at the first stage.
The centre will include fitness facilities for adults and children, a youth specific fitness area, dance studios, multi-purpose rooms, sporting and non-sporting programmes and will be disability compliant.
The remaining £400,000 funding for the project has already been secured.
